Bondi Beach Online Travel Guide Launches for the Australian Summer Dec 01

Showcasing Sydney’s enviable surf lifestyle, a new Bondi Beach travel guide www.atbondi.com launches today, featuring a wealth of information, imagery and inspiration for the global tourism market.

Bondi Beach, Sydney, NSW, Australia (PRWEB) December 01, 2011

Showcasing Australia’s famed surf lifestyle, atbondi.com features a wealth of information, imagery and inspiration for the global tourism market.

Director Andy Solo said the new destination website was created from market demand and aims to both strengthen the local community and promote Bondi Beach to domestic and international audiences.

“Anybody researching Bondi Beach will have noticed a surprising lack of online presence for such a world-renowned travel destination. Our new site atbondi.com celebrates our gorgeous beach, vibrant village and allows visitors to explore our unique coastal lifestyle.”

“It also forms part of a growing trend in tourism where people researching travel destinations are seeking authenticity. The travel market is increasingly savvy. They want independent information and reviews from locals and people who have already visited a destination. atbondi.com provides that and more”, said Ms Solo.

While the site is independently owned and operated, it is aligned with the State Government’s focus of “positioning NSW as Australia’s premier surfing and coastal holiday destination” to achieve the long term goal in strengthening the appeal of Sydney and NSW to young holidaymakers, as stated recently by Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase.

Ms Solo agrees. “The Australian tourism industry is experiencing a new surge of optimism and activity and I think our unique surf coast destinations can play a vital role in attracting visitors. It’s really exciting to be a part of that by showcasing one of our most beloved and iconic locations, Bondi Beach, particularly as we kick off the summer season.”

The new Bondi Beach website offers comprehensive practical information, tips from locals and top 10 reviews. It highlights local sights, tours, activities, art, culture, news and events and features a gallery of professional imagery.

Ms Solo noted there are about 500 businesses in Bondi Beach and the atbondi.com Directory provides details for them all – from spa resorts to surf lessons to immigration services.

“There’s a wonderful community feel to Bondi and I really encourage people to rinse off after a swim and wander up through town to one of the many cafes, fashion boutiques, galleries or gift stores. We’re famous for our beautiful beach but it’s our warm and welcoming, laid-back locals and lifestyle that really draws people in.

“Even those who can’t visit Bondi Beach in person can head to atbondi.com to explore, engage and enjoy our enviable coastal community.” Ms Solo said.

Don’t let those vacation days expire Dec 01

Some Portland, Oregon, hotels are offering perks for end-of-year guests.

(CNN) — After traveling all year for business meetings or conventions and taking vacation to cover a child’s inconvenient half days at school, many harried Americans are left with a dilemma. With a few weeks left in the year, their remaining precious vacation days are about to expire.

The average American worker has about six paid vacation days left unused at the end of the year, according to Hotwire.com’s American Travel Behavior Survey, conducted earlier this year.

It’s time to use ‘em or lose ‘em.

For the flexible traveler able to jump on a plane over the next two weeks, discounts are plentiful. That’s because business travel is winding down for the year while many leisure travelers are saving their pennies for holiday expenses.

Hotels and airlines are cutting prices and bundling discounts to fill rooms and seats that would otherwise go unsold. “It’s a great time to get last-minute deals if you’re flexible and have time available,” says Fiona O’Donnell, senior lifestyles and leisure analyst for the Mintel Reports Group. Here are a few deals:

Winter in the wine country (West Coast)

Winter is Cabernet season in the Napa Valley and hoteliers are celebrating the end of harvest with discounted winter room rates. While new wine ages in recently-filled barrels, the legendary Napa Valley Lodge in Yountville, California, has packages with room rates starting at $195 (Sunday through Thursday) and $245 (Saturday and Sunday) that include wine tasting passes, a bottle of wine, continental Champagne breakfast buffet and 20% off spa treatments. In contrast, Summer rates can start at $300/night. This offer is good now through January 31, 2012. Other Napa Valley offers, including restaurant month and vintner discounts are also available.

“The harvest season might be over, but there are still plenty of reasons to visit wine country in winter,” says Anne Banas, executive editor of Smarter Travel. “Not only will the wines warm you up, but wine tastings and dining options offer plenty to do indoors. Plus, you can often find good discounts on hotels and BBs, often 30% to 50% off regular season rates.”

Winter in wine country (East Coast)

Bundle up and head to the Finger Lakes region of New York, where the wine scene is low-key and travelers celebrate the cold with cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing. Banas recommends Atwater Estate Vineyards and the New York Wine and Culinary Center on Canandaigua Lake. Winter travelers can receive discounts or free nights with participating hotels and inns as well as discounts at local wineries and restaurants through March 31, 2012.

San Francisco –or Washington — here we come

Even cities where hotel prices increased this year are experiencing a lull between the holidays. Prices for San Francisco hotels have jumped 22% over 2010, due to convention bookings and domestic and European visitors, says Hotwire.com’s Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. But rates for the first few weeks in December are down by about 10% from peak prices, according to Hotwire.

The nation’s capital is almost always busy doing the people’s work, so hotel prices tend to remain high in good times and bad. However, government also slows down around the holidays. Prices in Washington are down about 15% from peak rates, according to Hotwire. “We love sending people to D.C. when the weather is OK because there are so many free attractions in the area,” says Bason. “You can see a lot of our nation’s history for free.”

Portland’s perks

Portland, Oregon, has a “Portland Perks” winter special designed to lure travelers to this food-obsessed and environmentally green Oregon city: $50 cash received upon check-in, free overnight parking, complimentary continental breakfast for two and a Portland Perks coupon book. This offer at select hotels requires a two-night minimum stay and is valid for travel from November 1 to December 30, 2011.

Set sail for the Caribbean

With many cruise ships already committed to trips to the Caribbean this month, cruise lines are dropping prices on any remaining empty rooms, says Amy Chlebeck, a travel consultant with Minneapolis-based Carlson Wagonlit Travel. Cruises departing Miami or Fort Lauderdale for three- to 10-day trips are available. Check with your favorite cruise line if you’ve sailed before. Travelers who aren’t familiar with the different cruise lines may want to hire a travel agent to help sort through the options, says Chlebeck. Some cruises cater to singles, while others target families or older couples. And some ships have better food than others.

Shop until you drop

If we can’t convince you to take a break from the holiday frenzy, how about a trip that takes care of your shopping needs? For travelers looking for cold weather, Minnesota may also offer the opportunity to play in the snow. You might not even need to rent a car when booking a Mall of America travel package. Hotels near the enormous Bloomington, Minnesota, mall often offer transportation to and from the Minneapolis-St. Paul airport and the mall. Check individual hotel offers at the Mall of America website.

Iceland Named Best in Travel for 2012 by National Geographic and Lonely Planet Dec 01

Increased northern lights activity and phenomenal nature make Iceland a must-see in 2012. For those who want to experience this award-winning destination up close, Icelandic travel agency Nordic Visitor is now offering a special Early Bird discount on all summer self-drive vacation packages.

Reykjavik, Iceland (PRWEB) December 01, 2011

Increased northern lights activity and phenomenal nature make Iceland a must-see in 2012. For those who want to experience this award-winning destination up close, Icelandic travel agency Nordic Visitor is now offering a special Early Bird discount on all summer self-drive vacation packages.

Located just below the Arctic Circle, Iceland is by no means the most northerly landmass on earth, but as an unforgettable and adventurous travel destination, it’s on top of the world.

Recently voted as Top Country in Lonely Planet’s “Readers’ Choice Best of Travel 2012″ awards, Iceland was also named as a “Best Trip for 2012″ by the editors at National Geographic Traveler magazine. What’s more, Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik, was chosen as Top City in the Lonely Planet poll, edging out Lisbon and Istanbul.

Of course, this “land of fire and ice” has been no stranger to the travel spotlight in recent years. Following the steep depreciation of Iceland’s currency in 2009, the country was selected as one of Lonely Planet’s “10 Best Value Destinations” for 2010 and was called a “Destination to Watch” that same year by USA Today, who also named Iceland as a “Top Travel Destination” for 2011.

So what makes this small Nordic nation such a travel hotspot?

Besides the favorable exchange rate for visitors, Iceland offers unsurpassed access to amazing natural phenomena, such as the famous attractions along the Golden Circle route just an hour’s drive or bus ride from Reykjavik. In less than eight hours, visitors can stand below spouting geysers, feel the mist of a giant waterfall and walk among old Viking stomping grounds in a tectonic rift valley at Thingvellir National Park-and still be back in time for a gourmet dinner in downtown Reykjavik.

In the coming year, visitors can expect even more natural wonders as Iceland undergoes two “maximum cycles”: one that is expected to produce more intense northern lights and one that may result in increased volcanic activity. As the world was reminded by the Eyjafjallajökull eruption in 2010, Iceland is a country still in the making, and few other destinations offer the same opportunities to witness the earth in action.

While Iceland’s unique nature is the biggest draw for visitors, Reykjavik’s lively downtown also offers plenty of charms: a bustling nightlife and music scene, the new Harpa concert hall, a busy shopping street with chic boutiques, relaxing thermal pools and spas, beautiful mountain views, various museums and a surprising assortment of cafes and coffee houses-most of which offer free Wi-Fi.

For those who’ve added Iceland to their bucket list for the New Year, Icelandic travel agency Nordic Visitor is now offering an Early Bird Special through December 31st on all self-drive packages in Iceland with arrivals between May and September 2012. These packages, including accommodation and rental car, give travelers the freedom to explore Iceland’s wonders at a more flexible pace.

On top of the special 15% discount, Nordic Visitor also provides self-drive customers with a free GPS navigation system and two authorized drivers for no additional charge along with a personalized itinerary, Iceland Road Atlas, detailed map, temporary cell phone, 24-hour emergency assistance and more.

About Nordic Visitor: With offices in Iceland, Norway and Sweden, Nordic Visitor is a fully-licensed travel agency and DMC offering unforgettable travel experiences in the Nordic countries. Staffed by local travel experts, Nordic Visitor specializes in tailor-made itineraries that cater to customers’ diverse needs and interests. Vacation packages include self-drive holidays, city breaks, northern lights tours, honeymoons, wilderness safaris, fjord cruises and much more. www.nordicvisitor.com

Businessman Gary Giordano denies involvement in disappearance of Aruba travel … Dec 01

During an 11-minute interview Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” Giordano refused to detail what happened to Gardner on Aug. 2, the last day she was seen alive, saying he has told that story to investigators “50, 60 times.” He has said she was swept out to sea while snorkeling. Her body has not been found.

Giordano, of Gaithersburg, Md., tried to clarify aspects of his behavior that investigators have called suspicious. He said the $1.5 million accidental death policy he took out on Gardner was part of a travel insurance package that covered both of them. He said he always takes out travel insurance because he wants his three sons to be protected if something happens to him.

“If I go traveling and I disappear, I want them to be covered. I maxed out on everything,” Giordano said.

He said he inquired about the insurance two days after Gardner’s disappearance on the advice of his former attorney, who told him he could be billed for expenses related to the search for her.

Aruban prosecutors still consider Giordano a suspect and are continuing to pursue the case with the assistance of the FBI. But they likely cannot return him to Aruba unless they intend to bring him to trial.

The case has been compared to that of Alabama teenager Natalee Holloway, who disappeared in Aruba in May 2005 on the last night of her high school graduation trip to the island. Her body was also never found and the prime suspect, Joran van der Sloot, was detained for months before he was eventually released for lack of evidence. He is now facing trial in the killing of a woman in Peru.

Asked by “Good Morning America” anchor Robin Roberts whether he had anything to do with Gardner’s disappearance, Giordano said, “absolutely not.” But he said he does have regrets.

“A person that I cared about, a companion … has disappeared on my watch,” he said. “It will weigh heavily on me for a very long time.”

Giordano denied that he and Gardner had been drinking before they went snorkeling. “We were a sober couple,” he said.

He also said surveillance video of him in the immediate aftermath of Gardner’s appearance fails to capture his sense of urgency. The video shows him shirtless, wearing swim trunks and tennis shoes, knocking on doors. He does not appear panicked.

He said he was exhausted after swimming back to shore and that he couldn’t find anyone.

“There’s nobody there! I’m supposed to scream into the air?” Giordano said.

Giordano, a divorced owner of an employment services company, was arrested on Aug. 5, as he was preparing to board his previously scheduled flight out of Aruba. He said he had been told by authorities that he could leave and that Gardner’s mother also encouraged him to go home.

Gardner’s friends and family have expressed doubts about her disappearance, saying it was unlikely the 35-year-old woman from Frederick, Md., would have gone snorkeling in the first place.

Giordano spoke alongside his attorney, Jose Baez, who won an acquittal earlier this year for Florida mother Casey Anthony, who was accused of killing her daughter.

Giordano’s sons stood behind him during the interview. He was reunited with them Wednesday night in New York, ABC News reported. After he found out Wednesday that the prosecutors’ appeal was denied, he told ABC that he never expected to be freed.

“I’d accepted the fact that they were gonna keep me from my kids forever,” Giordano said.

Moon Travel Guides Author Offers Budget-Friendly Tips for Traveling in Costa Rica Dec 01

Moon Travel Guides author Christopher P. Baker knows how to make a Costa Rica vacation affordable, yet thoroughly enjoyable. To celebrate the release of the new edition of his popular Moon Costa Rica travel guidebook, Baker is offering 10 tips for making the most of Costa Rica on a budget. Moon is also offering readers the opportunity to enter to win a $500 Continental Airlines gift card to help them embark on a Costa Rica vacation of their own.

Berkeley, CA (PRWEB) December 01, 2011

With its diverse climate, awe-inspiring beaches, and wide array of seldom-seen wildlife, it’s no surprise that more than two million visitors headed to Costa Rica in 2010. This number is expected to rise this year, as an ever-increasing number of travel deals to this tropical destination continue to lure visitors in search of luxury on a budget.

To help travelers best experience Costa Rica’s beauty and diversity without breaking the bank, Moon Costa Rica author Christopher P. Baker is offering ten helpful tips for how to travel, dine, and explore Costa Rica on a budget.

1. Stay in a hostel. Costa Rica has some great budget hostels, some of which (in San José) are located in beautiful, restored Modernist mansions. There are also budget backpackers’ hostels all over the country.

2. Take a bus for long-distance travel. Almost everywhere in Costa Rica is accessible by bus, and it should never cost more than about $15 (USD) to get anywhere.

3. Eat like a local at sodas, street-side stalls selling traditional Costa Rican dishes, where travelers can get a fixed lunch (casado) for as little as $3 to $5 (USD).

4. Travel taxi smart. Establish the price of a taxi ride before getting in the cab. Waiting to get to your final destination to inquire about the fare almost ensures being charged considerably more.

5. Buy Costa Rican coffee in bulk. For example, Café Britt in Heredia will pay the shipping costs to the USA or Canada if visitors buy twenty-five bags of coffee, chocolates, nuts, or Britt cookies, and mixing and matching is encouraged.

6. Travel in “Green Season”. Green Season is the Costa Rica Tourism Board’s preferred term for low season (May-Oct), when prices are reduced at hotels and even car rental agencies.

7. If based in San José for any length of time, rent an aparthotel-a self-catering unit that charges cents on the dollar compared to a normal hotel. By the beach, rent a villa-if traveling with family or a group of friends, visitors will enjoy significant savings over a hotel room.

8. When hungry, look for a Spoon restaurant. This restaurant chain specializes in serving delicious sandwiches, set meals, and desserts, all at bargain prices.

9. Buy crafts and souvenirs at the source. Not only will shoppers save money, they’ll be doing good by putting money directly into the hands of the artisans-many of whom are relatively poor (and sometimes even impoverished) indigenous people.

10. Buy produce and food from local markets. Visitors will have fun shopping like a Costa Rican, and be saving money. The Mercado Central in San José is a must-visit, but roadside produce stands can be found throughout the country.

To help travelers start saving for their next Costa Rica vacation, Moon Travel Guides is giving away one $500 Continental Airlines gift card to one lucky reader. Visit Moon.com for a chance to enter to win. Two runners up will receive copies of Moon Costa Rica.

Save time and money with travel services on your mobile phone Dec 01

As we get into the holiday season and plan trips to grandma’s house or make vacation plans (I’m going to Disneyland thanks to the cyber Monday sales Alaska Airlines had) I spent some time last week looking at applications to plan and manage my trips. I previously wrote about the amazing money I saved thanks to TripIt, but also note that TripIt lacks travel planning functionality so wanted to see what else was out there.

TripIt

TripIt is an amazing service with the Pro version ($49 per year) giving you airfare price monitoring protection, frequent flier points tracking, and much more. I have saved hundreds with TripIt Pro and will continue to subscribe. You can share your itinerary, learn about flight changes prior to even airline direct alerts, and even have your Gmail account monitored so that trips are setup automatically without you having to do any work at all.

Their travel account monitor is excellent with all of the details I see at the airline’s website appearing right in TripIt. They also have mobile clients for iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and Windows Phone. I personally find the MyTrips app on Windows Phone to be a bit better.

The one thing I wish TripIt could do is help me research and plan trips, but it is more of a trip manager than a planner so you have to look elsewhere for this functionality.

Kayak

Another service that I tried in the past and just revisited is Kayak. Kayak started out primarily as a trip research and planning tool, but has expanded and now offers itinerary integration and trip management similar to TripIt. You can simple email your confirmation information to your Kayak account to have trips setup.

TripIt allows you to connect with other TripIt members and share trips while comparing trip stats in a sort of competition. You can share specific trips through Kayak, but I don’t see support for a Kayak network of friends.

Kayak’s trip planning functions are pretty amazing and the information they provide on airlines, hotels, rental car agencies, and more is invaluable. There are mobile apps for iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Android, Symbian, and a mobile optimized web page.

I would probably go all in with Kayak, but the price monitoring service provided by TripIt Pro is way too valuable to me.

Yapta

Speaking of price tracking and refund alert services, I just discoverd Yapta last week and received a press release for their new iPhone application. Yapta is a service that provides airfare price tracking and refund alerts, similar to what is integrated into TripIt Pro. The cool thing about Yapta is that the service and app are FREE so if you don’t mind having a couple of apps to support your travel needs you could use both Kayak and Yapta together as a free full solution. I personally have all three loaded now on my iPhone 4S.

I never gave much thought to fluctuating airfare prices and there is no way humanly possible you could sit and track fares every single day by yourself. Thus, automated tools like Yapta are invaluable. One thing to keep in mind is that these airfare tracking tools generally only work when you purchase your tickets directly from the airlines and not through a travel agent or site like Travelocity. If you do use a 3rd party you will need to work with them on getting refunds. With apps like this and Kayak though you should be able to easily plan and make your trip reservations.

Actually, as you browse around the Yapta website you will notice that the trip planning and search tools are powered by Kayak so you do get both services in one through the web browser interface. This partnership of services is not yet supported on the iPhone application though and I also want to see at an Android application soon.

I am still discovering and figuring out the best travel apps and services for myself so if you have a favorite please do share here with me and the readers.

Eagles travel to Houston for championship Dec 01

It all comes down to this – one game to decide the Conference USA champion.  Beat the University of Houston, and the Golden Eagles win their first conference championship since 2003, but a win might also deny the Eagles and C-USA as a whole upwards of $6 million in BCS revenue, which is divided amongst the conference teams who have a team in a BCS game.

“It’s probably taken longer than I wanted it to, to be honest,” said head football coach Larry Fedora. “This year, this team has overcome a lot of things to put themselves in a position to play for the conference championship. We’re proud of the fact that all the great players from the state of Mississippi that we have on this football team have an opportunity to actually play for a championship.”

A loss by USM allows the C-USA teams to split up the $6 million from the BCS money that will be given to the conference because Houston is pretty much assured a ticket to a BCS bowl.  True, with a win the Eagles would almost certainly deny the Cougars a trip to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans or Fiesta Bowl in Arizona, which would be the first C-USA team to make a BCS appearance.

This is not an unfamiliar situation for the Eagles.  In 2003, the team hosted another Top 10 C-USA opponent – the TCU Horned Frogs. USM played the spoiler in that game by handing TCU their only loss that season with a 40-28 victory in Hattiesburg.  This situation is no different; the Eagles are fully intent on playing the spoiler role once again, despite what many people say would be a very unwise win.

The Houston Cougars have the No. 1 offense in all of college football.  They march to the tune of 449.7 passing yards per game – good enough for the top passing attack in the NCAA with quarterback Case Keenum.  Also, Houston scorches opponents with a whopping 52.7 points per game.

Keenum isn’t the only great quarterback in this game.  Golden Eagle Austin Davis is equally as good.  Davis is the leading passer in USM history, and with his next touchdown pass he will pass former Eagle quarterback Lee Roberts for most touchdown passes in a single season.

This game will be a match-up of two high-powered offenses who, when in full throttle, can outrun and outgun anybody in college football. If the Eagles are to have a chance, the keys to victory are: 1.) Keep record setting quarterback Case Keenum on the sidelines. 2.) Do not turn the ball over. 3.) Create turnovers. If USM can manage to do these things, they can most definitely pull off the upset in Houston. Whatever the outcome, this game will possibly be the single most important game in the league’s history.

“I think it’s a great statement for the league and where this league is,” Fedora said. “This league has grown and gained more and more respect each year. It’s peaking at a time that’s good for college football and the league. Conference USA is showing that it’s as strong as anybody out there and can compete with any of the conferences. I think it’s really good for the league.”

No. 2 Gophers travel to North Dakota to face rival Sioux Dec 01

There’s a bit of a logjam atop the WCHA standings, and No. 2 Minnesota and No. 5 North Dakota are right in the middle of it.

Oh, and they’ll be meeting this weekend, too.

The Gophers, who trail only Wisconsin in the WCHA, will have a chance to extend their two-point lead over the third-place Sioux in North Dakota this weekend.

“The conference is so tight, especially where we’re at according to North Dakota. It’s going to be a huge last couple weekends of play,” Minnesota assistant coach Joel Johnson said. “Two real good teams are facing off this weekend.”

Minnesota (14-2-0, 8-2-0 WCHA) has historically dominated the rival Sioux (10-5-1, 7-4-1 WCHA). The Gophers lead the all-time series 29-3.

However, all three losses came last season, as UND beat Minnesota in three of the teams’ four meetings.

Senior captain Sarah Erickson said that “it’s more of a rivalry now than it ever has been.”

“We kind of beat ourselves last year,” Erickson said. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole right away and we weren’t able to get out of it. [The losses] give us a lot of incentive this year. I think we can calm down and just play some hockey.”

The Sioux are led by twins Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls. The sisters starred for Minnesota in 2008-09, but transferred to UND after the season in part to be closer to their native Grand Forks, N.D.

“They’re very good hockey players. The fact that they played here and left only intensifies the rivalry,” Johnson said.

They played for the United States in the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. They combined for 111 points in 2010-11, their first year with the Sioux.

This season, Jocelyne Lamoureux leads the conference in scoring with 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists), and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls is fifth with 32 (12 goals, 20 assists).

Gophers defenseman Megan Bozek said Minnesota’s game plan will be different than last year’s.

“Last year, I think we focused a little too much on their two best forwards,” she said. “We need to protect their whole team.

“If we focus on two players, they have three other lines that can capitalize.”

Bozek said the games will be physical, and she expects the referees will be prepared for physical play.

“We just need to keep our composure. We have our games where we get a lot of penalties, and we have our games where we stick to the bare minimum of zero, one or two,” she said. “We need to stay out of the box.”

The Sioux’s home, Ralph Engelstad Arena, is widely regarded as one of the nicest venues in the nation, and Erickson said it’s a fun place to play.

“It’s an amazing arena to play in,” she said, “and they get more fans every year because they’re getting better and better every year, which is nice.”

UND is averaging 2,277 fans per contest, the most fans in the nation.
