‘Men in Black 3′ Trailer Teases Time-Travel Plot Dec 12

Columbia Pictures officially kicked off the marketing blitz for its Summer 2012 3D sequel, Men in Black III, with a pair of letter-based posters that featured the familiar silhouettes of Agent J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones). The studio continues its efforts today, with the release of an official teaser trailer for the sci-fi action/comedy threequel.

If you’ve been following the third MIB movie’s progress, then you know the film has encountered its fair share of production woes, including a drawn-out filming delay due to substantial script reworking, which eventually required an intervention by blockbuster writer David Koepp. Will the final product prove to be worth all that trouble?

Men in Black III sees J forced to time-travel (or, rather, time-jump… literally) back to the 1960s, when a trouble-making alien disrupts the timeline and kills the younger version of K (Josh Brolin) – an act that not only affects the future of the MIB organization, but the very existence of humankind. Beyond that, it’s difficult to say what other major plot points present in Etan Cohen’s original screenplay draft (see: our Men in Black III script review) remain in tact, given the numerous rewrites it has undergone, by this point.

That in mind, check out the official Men in Black III teaser trailer:

All things considered, this is a pretty basic (if not especially effective) teaser trailer. We’re given a brief reminder of just what the Men in Black spend their time doing, Smith resorting to his trademark wiseacre shtick, glances at some of the film’s unusual extraterrestrials, an introduction to cast newcomer Emma Thompson, a quick look at one of the film’s 3D action set pieces (ie. J leaping off the Chrysler Building) and an even briefer glance at the movie’s actual plot. That’s all informative enough, but not so much intriguing or attention-grabbing.

By far, the “money shot” here is the ending, where we get out first look at Brolin as a youthful Agent K. The actor very much nails Jones’ deadpan inflection and facial mannerisms; hopefully, he’ll be able to sustain that act throughout a good portion of the MIB threequel.

You can get a better look at this early Men in Black III footage by checking out the trailer image gallery below:

A lot of people are finding it hard to muster much enthusiasm for Men in Black III and with good reason; not only is Men in Black II generally considered a pretty subpar sequel, that movie also came out all the way back in 2002. It doesn’t help that the time travel plot setup for the third MIB movie is somewhat reminiscent of the “alternate reality” angle in the fourth Shrek movie, Shrek Forever After; the latter franchise didn’t exactly benefit greatly from using that sitcom-style narrative approach and adding 3D to the mix, so it’s difficult to suspect the MIB series will manage to do otherwise…

We will see how it all turns out when Men in Black III arrives in 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D theaters around the U.S. on May 25th, 2012.

Travel Q&A: Where are the hidden cruise fees? Dec 12

Q. I read with interest your column about hidden hotel fees. Hotels aren’t the only sneaky ones. I’d always read that cruises were all-inclusive — not so. Can you print some of the big hidden fees with cruises to warn potential passengers?

A. Most cruise lines are more upfront about their fees, and you receive an itemized bill before leaving the ship so you can dispute charges.

For example, many cruise lines have automatic gratuities for services provided by cabin stewards, wait staff, etc. However, passengers also have the option to change the amount of those gratuities at the pursers’ desk.

The other most common expenses not included in the all-inclusive cruise price include:

Excursions: Ships provide tours and transportation at each port of call, but these will cost you, anywhere from $50 to several hundred dollars.

Specialty dining: The main dining rooms and buffets are free, as is room service. However, you will be charged extra for eating in special restaurants such as steakhouses, or eateries such as Ben and Jerry’s ice cream parlor.

Beverages: Most ships charge not only for alcohol, but also for bottled water and soda. Special flat-fee beverage packages are usually available for the latter. Cut costs for alcohol by taking advantage of nightly drink specials or happy hours.

Onboard amenities: Extra fees are charged for some onboard activities, spa treatments, salon services, Internet usage and laundry. As noted above, day care often is an added expense, too. Use of the pools and entertainment shows usually are free.

TSA plans phone line for disabled, assisted travelers Dec 12

After elderly passengers at JFK Airport complained about how they were treated by the Transportation Security Administration, the agency said Sunday it would establish an information line that travelers who are disabled or need assistance can call before flying.

The TSA blog post written by blogger Bob Burns said in part:

“[W]e’re in the process of establishing an 800 number dedicated to travelers with disabilities, medical conditions, or those who may require assistance during screening. Passengers will be able to call this number prior to flying to get guidance and information about screening, based on their needs.” The agency also said TSA agents are regularly trained in how to screen such travelers.

The actions come after Lenore Zimmerman, 85, of Long Beach, N.Y., says she was “strip searched” by the TSA in late November. The agency says it never conducts strip searches. Her son Bruce Zimmerman told the N.Y. Daily News that his mother had to remove her blouse and underwear in front of a TSA agent.

During the screening, Zimmerman’s back brace was removed and X-rayed, an action the agency now says went against its own policy and resulted from a misunderstanding. The brace was mistaken for a money belt, the TSA says.

Ruth Sherman, 88, of Sunrise, Fla., says TSA agents pulled down her pants after seeing something concealed in the waistband, according to the N.Y. Daily News. Sherman has a colostomy bag and was “crying and very upset” when agents handled it, her son Ralph Sherman told the paper.

The complaints prompted Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and New York state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Queens) on Sunday to ask the TSA to create “passenger advocates” who know the rules but would be sensitive to the needs of passengers.

Pope celebrates Guadalupe feast, confirms he’ll travel to Mexico, Cuba

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Celebrating the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and confirming he will travel to Mexico and Cuba in the spring, Pope Benedict XVI called on the people of Latin America to hold firm to their faith.

During his homily at the Mass Dec. 12 in St. Peter’s Basilica, the pope prayed that God would guide the decisions of the Latin American people, so they could progress in “building a society based on the development of good, the triumph of love and the expansion of justice.”

Pope Benedict added that he intends “to make an apostolic trip to Mexico and Cuba before Easter to proclaim the word of Christ and to strengthen the conviction that this is a precious time to evangelize with a steady faith, a lively hope and an ardent charity.”

Various Spanish language news outlets have reported the trip will take place between March 23 and March 29.

In addition to marking the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Americas, the pope’s Mass marked the bicentennials of many Latin American countries, which gained their independence from Spain between 1810 and 1825.

The pope said he could not let the anniversaries pass without demonstrating “the joy of the church for the many gifts which God, in his infinite goodness, has bestowed on these beloved nations throughout these years.”

The bicentennial celebrations should not only recall historical, social and political events, he said, they also should include recognition of the Christian faith of the vast majority of the region’s people and how that faith contributed to the development of society.

The Mass was celebrated in Spanish, Portuguese and Latin with several musical pieces — including the Kyrie and Gloria — drawn from the “Misa Criolla,” a 1964 composition in Spanish that includes elements of Latin American folk music. Latin American musicians sang and played traditional instruments such as the bombo drum, flute, guitars and various percussion instruments like goat nails.

Preceding the Mass, young people from Latin America and the Caribbean walked down the central aisle carrying flags from their home country; some wore colorful traditional costumes.

Concelebrating with the pope were Cardinals Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican secretary of state; Marc Ouellet, president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America; Norberto Rivera Carrera of Mexico City; and Raymundo Damasceno Assis of Aparecida, Brazil.

Pope Benedict said that, as the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean continue to develop and gain a greater role in the international community, they must “safeguard the rich treasure of faith and their historic-cultural dynamism.”

The values they must continue to promote include “always being defenders of human life from the moment of conception until natural death and promoters of peace; they must also safeguard the genuine nature and mission of the family,” strengthen schools and help parents prepare their children to be good and upright citizens, he said.

Appearing with indigenous features to the Indian Juan Diego in 1531, Our Lady of Guadalupe showed the indigenous people that her son was their savior as well, the pope said. “She always leads us to her divine son, who is revealed as the foundation of the dignity of every human being (and) as a love stronger that the power of evil and death.”

The pope said the region’s people also must promote reconciliation and solidarity, do more to protect the environment and “strengthen efforts to overcome poverty, illiteracy and corruption and eradicate all forms of injustice, violence, criminality, citizens’ insecurity, drug trafficking and extortion.”

The pope entrusted to Our Lady of Guadalupe his intentions and the destiny of the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean as they seek a better future.

Traveler Reviews Weigh Heavily in Travel Booking Decisions Dec 12

RICHMOND, Va., Dec 12, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) –
As the end-of-year holiday countdown continues, Americans are making
final plans for travel and taking to the web for advice. According to
the third annual Access
America Vacation Confidence Index released by Mondial
Assistance USA, 60 percent of consumers say they factor other
travelers’ online reviews into their plans when booking a vacation. With
a 10 percent anticipated increase in holiday travel for 2011 — nearly
six in 10 Americans (57 percent) are confident they will take a holiday
trip this year — popular travel review and social media websites can
expect more traffic this holiday season.

“With the growing popularity and influence of social media and online
review sites, it isn’t surprising that more and more consumers are using
these sites as resources when booking their travel,” said Daniel Durazo,
director of communications for Mondial Assistance. “In these tough
economic times, consumers want assurance that if they are going to spend
on travel, they are selecting the best experiences, and reviews from
peers and colleagues act as a security blanket for uncertain travelers.”

Online Word of Mouth is King and Affects
Bookings

Travelers under 35 are most likely to say that online travel reviews
influence their travel plans (74 percent) while those 55 and over are
least likely to be influenced by reviews (44 percent).

Nearly 79 percent of respondents with a household income of $75,000 or
more factor other travelers’ reviews into their own plans, while less
than half of those with an income of under $25,000 do so (46 percent).

The Trust Factor

Nearly two thirds of respondents (63 percent) find other travelers’
reviews to be trustworthy, while 29 percent are less trusting.

Travelers under 35 are more likely than those who are older to
trust the travel reviews they read (70 percent vs. 54 percent).

Over three quarters of respondents with a household income of
$75,000 or more (77 percent) find travel reviews to be trustworthy
compared to just half of those with an income of under $25,000 (50
percent).

Social Networking Sites are Most Popular for
Sharing

Facebook packs a punch: Among travelers who share reviews of their
travel experiences online (24 percent of respondents), social
networking sites such as Facebook are most popular. Nearly one in five
(18 percent) say that they share their travel experiences on social
networks, more than double the proportion of those who post on travel
review sites (eight percent).

Young Adults, Affluent More Likely to Share
Online

Adults under 35 are more likely than those who are 35+ to share their
travel experiences online (35 percent vs. 20 percent), particularly on
social media sites (29 percent vs. six percent).

More affluent adults are also more likely to share about their
travels. More than a third of those with a household income of $75,000
or more (36 percent) share their travel reviews online, compared to 15
percent of those with a household income of less than $25,000, and
they are twice as likely to use social networks to do so (24 percent
vs. 12 percent).

The Access America Vacation Confidence Index is based on a
telephone survey conducted by Ipsos November 2-7, 2011 of a nationally
representative sample of 1,000 randomly-selected adults aged 18 and over
residing in the U.S. With a sample of this size, the results are
considered accurate within ±3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20,
of what they would have been had the entire population of adults in the
U.S. been polled. The margin of error will be larger within regions and
for other sub-groupings of the survey population. These data were
weighted to ensure the sample’s regional and age/gender composition
reflects that of the actual U.S. population according to data from the
U.S. Census Bureau.

BEIJING, Dec. 12th, 2011 /PRNewswire-Asia/ — Qunar announced today that Qunar Mobile has been named by Apple’s App Store as the runner-up of Best Travel App Category and the best Chinese Travel App of 2011 in China. The Chinese version of French travel app Fotopedia was awarded as the winner in the category.

The leading travel service, which launched just last year, recently surpassed 7 million users and has become the most popular travel mobile service in China. “We are honored to see that Apple China’s App Store has named our app the runner-up of Best Travel App Category in China,” said CEO CC Zhuang. “Travel needs to be mobile. Mobile business is extremely important to the company’s overall strategy. Qunar believes in technology innovation and is committed to providing diversified solutions to travelers on the road through its mobile platform. Promising mobile travel market in China

According to iResearch, China‘s mobile Internet market has reached 10.83 billion by Q3 2011, which increased 154.6% year-on-year and 38.9% quarter-on-quarter. The popularity of smart phones also contributes to the tremendous growth. Chinese leading market research firm Analysys International indicates that smart phones will take up 50% of China‘s total mobile phone market by 2013, and the number of China‘s mobile internet users will reach 500 million by 2012, surpassing the number of PC internet users. Given this trend, mobile apps have strong prospects. The download of mobile phone apps in China already reached 863 million in 2010, and it is expected to surpass 20 billion by 2013.

Mobile internet brings travelers a lot of freedom and convenience during their journey, and becomes more and more essential for travelers. iResearch data also stated that the size of China‘s online travel market reached 100 billion RMB in 2010, with a year-on-year growth of 58.0%. In addition to that, China‘s mobile internet users reached 318 million by the end of June 2011.

“We designed and built Qunar app with the goal of creating a simple, but beautiful user experience for travelers to use on the road. We aim to provide a one-stop shop for travelers.” said Larry Chen, Vice President of Qunar Mobile Business.

Technology Drives Innovation

CC Zhuang, CEO of Qunar, leads the company to achieve a market leader position within only six years. The popularity of Qunar mobile is another testament of Qunar’s commitment in innovative technology.

GOP’s Perry trying to revive 2012 bid in Iowa with new outsider message, more … Dec 12

And he’s doubled down on television advertising for the home stretch, having already spent more than $2 million in Iowa only to see his support remain in single digits.

Perry’s revamped charge to the Jan. 3 caucuses is a sign of the pressure he faces to revive his faltering national campaign. And it’s far from clear whether it’s working.

“I’ll suggest to you, we’ve got to send an outsider to Washington, D.C., that is willing to stand up to all those special interests,” Perry told more than 200 people crammed into a cozy coffee shop near Iowa State University Sunday.

It’s a far cry from the “get America working again” theme he carried into the race in August, touting Texas’ nation-leading job growth during his 10 years as governor. And it’s not clear Perry is accustomed to the new approach.

Perry entered the race hoping to cobble together a coalition of economic, Christian and tea party conservatives. After a hot start with fundraising in September, however, he fumbled his way through a series of nationally televised debates.

Meanwhile, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a former private sector executive, managed to hold on to the mantle of the party’s chief economic candidate. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, the new national and Iowa leader of the GOP race, emerged as a candidate seen to have the most experience.

Perry has fallen back on his Christian faith, with two recent ads promoting Christian themes. He has also campaigned at forums sponsored by conservative evangelical groups.

Despite the difficulties, Perry has retained an upbeat demeanor on the campaign trail, and has been at ease meeting voters one-on-one.

It’s an asset his campaign hopes to feature during the 14-day Iowa bus tour he begins in northwest Iowa on Wednesday, ahead of Thursday’s debate in Sioux City, the final debate before the caucuses.

It’s a chance for him to feature his courtly charm, as he did promoting the daily blend for sale at Café Diem in Ames. “It’s a light little coffee,” he said with a grin.

In a barbershop in Beaufort, S.C., last week, Perry was asked how he was coping with campaigning after undergoing back surgery last summer. “I’ve gotten my second wind,” Perry replied, rocking in his black orthopedic shoes.

Whether Perry can claw his way back into contention is unclear.

Last week, he opened a new line of attack against Romney and Gingrich, pointing out their past support for requiring people to acquire health insurance, a mandate very unpopular with conservatives.

Perry began airing an ad in Iowa attacking the two for the position, and jabbed at both on the issue during Saturday’s nationally televised debate from Des Moines. Perry’s back-and-forth with Romney on the health care mandate produced its most memorable moment, when Romney tried to bet Perry $10,000 that the Texan had misstated his position.

Still, Perry has at times failed to press the attack on other Republicans.

On Sunday in Iowa, he failed to remind his audience that Romney and Gingrich had supported a key principle of the health care law President Barack Obama signed last year.

“I don’t think you need to be forced to buy a product, a private product, like insurance. That is not government’s role to demand that you buy that. That’s one of the reasons I think this is an unconstitutional piece of legislation,” Perry said, outlining the key objection conservatives have to Obama’s chief policy accomplishment.

Ames Republican Bill McCall, who came to see Perry, said the candidate seemed hesitant to make the sale.

“He could have said: ‘Did you see the debate last night? Well, then you know what I told Romney and Gingrich,’” said McCall, a retired engineer who is undecided and considering Perry. “But it’s like he didn’t know how to handle the audience. We were ready, and he couldn’t close the deal.”
