Snow and wind disrupting travel in Scotland Dec 13

Damage to train at InvernessA firefighter looks at damage from a fallen tree on the Wick to Inverness train

Snow and high winds have disrupted road and rail travel across Scotland.

Gusts of up to 70mph swept across the central belt and forecasters warned of heavy snow on high ground.

In the Highlands, seven vehicles were involved in a collision which closed the A9 at Dalwhinnie for almost seven hours.

Rail services have been severely disrupted, with one passenger being injured after a train travelling from Wick struck a fallen tree at Inverness.

Northern Constabulary said the seven-vehicle collision on the A9 had blocked the road at the scene. Three cars, three articulated lorries and a van were involved in the collision at about 12:50. The road reopened at 19:30.

A police spokesman said there had been one minor injury.

Finance Secretary John Swinney was travelling in a car close behind when the collision happened.

The minister and his team witnessed the incident and were said to have offered assistance at the scene.

Further down the A9, the snow gates are closed at Blair Atholl in Perthshire, which was also causing travel problems.

The Met Office upgraded its weather alert from yellow to amber for heavy snow across some parts of the country.

Police on the A9Snow has been falling on higher ground in the Highlands/Pic: Anne Mcgee

Amber warnings cover Central, Tayside, Fife, Strathclyde, the south-west of Scotland, Lothian and Borders, Highlands and Western Isles.

The Grampian area is on yellow, while southern and western Scotland could also experience very strong winds at times.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said the Multi Agency Response Team (Mart) would be operating for at least 24 hours to monitor the situation.

Scotrail said train services in the west Highlands and north of Perth were particularly disrupted by the weather. Line speeds there have been restricted to 50mph by Network Rail for safety reasons.

There were problems on the Aberdeen-Inverness line, Inverness to Wick and Kyle, the West Highland lines, and Edinburgh to Dundee and Aberdeen.

Scotrail said the 13:59 Inverness to Wick train struck a fallen tree near Clachnaharry, north of Inverness.

One passenger was understood to have suffered bruising and was taken to hospital.

A Scotrail spokeswoman said: “It is understood the train struck a fallen tree and that one person suffered bruising. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.”

Train services at Stirling were being disrupted by signalling problems.

Network Rail said the Tay Bridge had been closed to trains by winds over 80mph.

The Tay Road Bridge was also closed with diversions via the Friarton Bridge in Perth.

ShawlandsThe closure of Kilmarnock Road in Shawlands caused tailbacks on the south side of Glasgow

However, this was also closed to high-sided vehicles at about 19:00 and all lanes were restricted in both directions.

The A83 at Rest And Be Thankful has been closed for emergency repairs because of the severe weather and will remain closed overnight.

In the Shawlands area on the south side of Glasgow, the A77 Kilmarnock Road had been closed in both directions because of an unsafe building.

It is understood the fire service were dealing with a satellite dish which was hanging from a tenement. The incident caused long tailbacks and diversions to bus routes but the road has now reopened.

Some ferry services have been cancelled and travellers were advised to check with operators.

In Glasgow the Christmas ice rink and big wheel in George Square have been closed.

Two schools on the Western Isles – Castlebay and Eoligarry – and Stratherrick Primary near Inverness have been shut by the weather.

Mallaig Primary in Lochaber remains closed after it was damaged during last week’s storm.

Pupils will take lessons in a church hall and the local high school from Wednesday until repairs are done.

Orbitz travels the m-commerce site redesign route Dec 13

The travel company has sped up navigating and browsing its m-commerce site.

Online travel company Orbitz has upped the ante once again on its mobile commerce web site, this time taking advantage of innate features of smartphones, enhancing the speed with which travelers can navigate and use the site, adding package deals and offering mobile-only discounts.

Orbitz now enables consumers to swipe through pictures of hotels. Swipe is a gesture generally associated with apps. But now, by using web programming language HTML5 in its redesign, it has enabled swipe on its m-commerce site. HTML5 allows programmers to makes sites behave more like their richer counterparts, apps, because the language can reach into a smartphone to gain access to built-in features and functions such as swiping and GPS.

The travel firm has also sped up browsing on the site. The mobile commerce site now uses the company’s in-house global online travel agency platform, which has been under development for a few years. The platform uses a page rendering framework, a web tool that enables fast creation of mobile web pages. When a consumer on a smartphone requests a page from Orbitz, be it the home page or search results or hotel details, the platform takes the content from the desktop page and funnels it through the page rendering framework, which instantly optimizes it for the mobile device. This is quicker, and easier to manage, than creating mobile-optimized pages for each desktop page and then redirecting consumers on mobile devices to those pages, says Chris Brown, vice president of product, who head m-commerce at Orbitz.

Shoppers on the m-commerce site now can access vacation packages. They can combine hotel rooms with airfares to access less expensive rates that are not offered when booking only one of the two. And Orbitz has introduced Mobile Steals, discounts on travel offered only to consumers accessing Orbitz.com on smartphones or the iPad, or using one of the smartphone or iPad apps. The mobile-only rates are good for hotels in 50 cities worldwide.

“The mobile space is booming and we see opportunity growing rapidly and envisioned many better ways to serve our customers,” Brown says. “We’ve been getting data on what they are doing on the devices and learning how we can improve the experience.”

Orbitz launched its mobile site in 2006. The site offered information such as background on hotels; customers had to phone an agent to book travel. In 2007 it updated the site to include real-time information, such as airport wait times and traffic to and from airports. In 2010 it commerce-enabled the site, allowing customers to book flights, hotels and car rentals.

Mobile commerce is big for Orbitz at the last minute. 65% of hotel bookings are made the same day as arrival. Orbitz LLC is No. 12 in the Internet Retailer Mobile Commerce Top 300.

Get Digital Travel Discounts Dec 13

How does 40 percent off an all-inclusive four-night stay for two at a Jamaican bungalow sound? Or a nine-day Kenyan safari, complete with airfare, slashed to $2,697 from $4,495?

Now consumers looking for a bargain getaway can find impressive discounts by trolling the Web. Last fall, LivingSocial, a daily deal website, rolled out Escapes, a travel site offering overnight stays and vacation packages at 30 to 50 percent below published rates. Groupon, the company that pioneered the social buying phenomenon, recently partnered with Expedia to form Group Getaways with Expedia.

[For more tips and advice, get your copy of 50 Smart Money Moves today.]

Here’s how the model works: Bargain hunters sign up on a website to receive emails describing the latest deals. These could range from a half-price weekend at a nearby bed and breakfast to international jaunts. Groupon, for example, offered five days at a Cabo San Lucas resort for two with hot stone massages and a swim-with-the-dolphins experience for $1,340, a savings of $671 over the typical seasonal deal.

The popularity of these online travel discounts has spawned a slew of start-up sites that offer new twists on traditional offers. For example, TripAlertz pegs its prices to the number of bookings, and SniqueAway is an invitation-only (you can join only if invited by another member) luxury hotel deal site. Inevitably, aggregators like Dealery and Yipit have also cropped up. These time-saver sites compile deals from a variety of Groupon clones and winnow them according to your preferences.

[See 10 Ways to Start Earning Extra Money Now.]

Many deals may be available for just one day, but carry a booking window of six months to a year. Once you settle on a travel offer, you supply your credit card information and a travel voucher is sent to you for the trip. Some sites offer incentives if you share a deal through social networking: Should you book a trip on LivingSocial, for example, your holiday is free if three of your friends also sign up. Keep in mind that certain deal providers, like Groupon, will cancel an offer if they cannot deliver a minimum number of customers to the vendor. But if that occurs, your credit card will not be charged.

What’s in it for the travel industry? Exposure, for one, and luxury hotels, typically loath to lower rates, are able to offload discounted rooms by packaging them with value add-ons, such as spa treatments, without tarnishing their polished images.

For the offers to be a win for you, too, will depend on what drives your vacation decisions. Since deals are doled out randomly, they work best for those with a budget in mind but who aren’t stuck on a specific destination. Still, when that all-inclusive deal at an Arizona spa pops up in your inbox in the depths of winter, the most careful travel planner can be tempted.

[See 6 Ways to Get Extra Perks at Budget Hotels.]

Paul Lasley, cohost of “Traveling” at OnTravel.com, likens the situation to shoppers considering impulse buys in the supermarket checkout line. “With the time pressure, maybe you’re not going to think it through too carefully.”

Before you bite, check the hotel’s website for rates; some deals may not be as deeply discounted as advertised. A hotel may also offer a similar discount or value-added package directly. Either way, check the terms to make sure the deal is fully refundable and under what circumstances. For example, LivingSocial offers money-back guarantees within five days of your purchase and Groupon will provide refunds if you don’t get the dates you want or have a bad experience. Buyer’s remorse? You can always turn to sites like Lifesta or CoupRecoup to sell unused coupons for a small fee.

Watch light particles travel through a Coke bottle at a trillion frames per … Dec 13

Watch light particles travel through a Coke bottle at a trillion frames per second!Watch light particles travel through a Coke bottle at a trillion frames per second! Three MIT physicists took the idea of high-exposure photography and cranked it up to absolutely ridiculous levels, using special optical equipment to show actual light particles on the move. Prepare to see the fastest thing you’ll ever see… in slow motion.

The video up top was created using a streak camera, a new form of imaging technology that shoots light particles, or photons, through a narrow slit into an electric field. This electric field deflects the photons in a direct perpendicular to their original path. The camera detects the degree of deflection, and uses this to build up a two-dimensional image. However, these aren’t the dimensions of an ordinary photo – one is the spatial dimension of the photon moving on a straight line, and the other dimension is the time it takes to move through the field.

Watch light particles travel through a Coke bottle at a trillion frames per second!

To create a more traditional type of two-dimensional image – one with width and length – the experiment needs to be repeated millions of times, with the streak camera ever so slightly moved after each attempt. That sounds like it would take forever – and indeed, team member Ramesh Raskar has dubbed this “the world’s slowest fastest camera” — but when it only takes a nanonsecond for the light to move through the field, all the necessary data can be gathered in about an hour.

Using a computer algorithm, all the different results can be stitched together into a sequence of coherent two-dimensional images of light on the move. Each frame has an exposure time of about 1.71 picoseconds, or just over a trillionth of a second. The videos are composed of about 480 frames that have been slowed down enough that we can actually see the virtual movement of the light particles. For more on how the videos are created, check out this interview with the scientists involved:

Watch light particles travel through a Coke bottle at a trillion frames per second!

While this is a seriously awesome, you probably should hold off from adding the streak camera to your holiday gift list. Beyond the $250,000 price tag, the camera can only produce these videos for events that can be exactly repeated over and over again, so it can’t record the movement of light in everyday life. Still, Raskar says this technology could be used to help analyze the physical structure of manufactured and biological materials, in what he calls an “ultrasound with light.” Raskar explains:

“An ultimate dream is, how do you create studio-like lighting from a compact flash? How can I take a portable camera that has a tiny flash and create the illusion that I have all these umbrellas, and sport lights, and so on? With our ultrafast imaging, we can actually analyze how the photons are traveling through the world. And then we can recreate a new photo by creating the illusion that the photons started somewhere else.”

Fellow team member Andreas Velten adds:

“As photons bounce around in the scene or inside objects, they lose coherence. Only an incoherent detection method like ours can see those photons. [Those photons could allow us to] learn more about the material properties of the objects, about what is under their surface and about the layout of the scene. Because we can see those photons, we could use them to look inside objects – for example, for medical imaging, or to identify materials.”

Paul Allen unveils grand plan for next-gen manned space travel Dec 13

(Credit:
Stratolaunch Systems)

Billionaire Paul Allen today announced his grand ambition for the next generation of manned space travel: the largest aircraft ever built, which would be capable of orbital missions with quick turnarounds, greater safety, and better cost-effectiveness than anything previously launched.

At a press conference this morning in Seattle, Allen–Microsoft’s co-founder–along with Burt Rutan unveiled their new company, Stratolaunch Systems. Allen and Rutan previously collaborated on the creation of SpaceShipOne, which won the Ansari X Prize for being the first privately funded spacecraft to leave the Earth’s atmosphere.

Now, Allen and Rutan are at it again, and at their Seattle event, they announced a next-generation mobile launch system that, at a cost that Allen said was “an order of magnitude” higher than SpaceShipOne, could completely shake up the world of manned and cargo spaceflight.

The new launch system has several elements. First, it has a giant carrier aircraft that will be built by Rutan’s Scaled Composites. Second, it will have a multistage booster made by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. And finally, it will have “a state-of-the-art mating and integration system allowing the carrier aircraft to safely carry a booster weighing up to 490,000 pounds.” That element will be manufactured by Dynetics.

In a statement today, the company outlined its plans:

Stratolaunch Systems will bring airport-like operations to the launch of commercial and government payloads and, eventually, human missions. Plans call for a first flight within five years. The air-launch-to-orbit system will mean lower costs, greater safety, and more flexibility and responsiveness than is possible today with ground-based systems. Stratolaunch’s quick turnaround between launches will enable new orbital missions as well as break the logjam of missions queued up for launch facilities and a chance at space. Rutan, who has joined Stratolaunch Systems as a board member, said he was thrilled to be back working with Allen. “Paul and I pioneered private space travel with SpaceShipOne, which led to Virgin Galactic’s commercial suborbital SpaceShipTwo Program.

12,000 feet runway

The Stratolaunch carrier aircraft will truly be massive. It is expected to have a wingspan of 380 feet–longer than a football field. As Rutan put it during the press conference, “You should never show this airplane, or a model of it, without right next to it, showing a plane that we know how big it is, like a little 747.”

The carrier aircraft will actually utilize some of Boeing’s most famous plane–six 747 engines will power it. But because it will have a takeoff weight of more than 1.2 million pounds, it needs a runway at least 12,000 feet long in order to get off the ground. That means that it is likely, Stratolaunch says, that it will take off from a place like Kennedy Space Center.

But the manufacture of the Stratolaunch system will take place at the Mojave Air and Space Port, in Mojave, Calif. That is where Rutan’s Scaled Composites is located, as well as the factory where Richard Branson’s Virgin Galactic will be making its SpaceShipTwo rocket and WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft.

Stratolaunch said that its new system will be capable of taking passengers into low-Earth orbit, but its initial efforts are expected to be focused on cargo. “Human flights,” the company said in its announcement, “will follow after safety, reliability, and operability are demonstrated.”

Clearly, though, it will be years before the system takes flight. Stratolauch said that it should be at least five years before the first flight. But then, the project could be capable of powering the dreams of future space enthusiasts.

“We have plenty and many challenges ahead of us,” said Allen at the press conference today. “But by the end of the decade…Stratolaunch will be putting spacecraft into orbit [and will] give tomorrow’s children something to search for in the night sky.”

Update (Tuesday, 11:51 a.m. PT): This story now includes specifications for the Stratolaunch project.

Cuban Americans could travel only once every three years if measure is approved Dec 13

A proposal in Congress to roll back the Obama administration’s broad opening of Cuban-American travel and remittances to the island appears likely to be approved as part of a massive year-end spending bill, according to Congress members.

“My concern is that this is very much alive,” Rep. José E. Serrano, a New York Democrat who has long opposed U.S. sanctions on Cuba, declared Monday as he tried to mobilize opposition to the proposal.

President Barack Obama has threatened to veto the measure, submitted by South Florida Republican Mario Diaz Balart in July and approved by a committee as part of a Treasury spending bill.

The Treasury bill is one of the nine end-of-year U.S. government spending measures rolled into one and now under consideration by the House and Senate. The two chambers are trying to agree on a compromise version before the holidays recess.

There’s been no sign so far that the Diaz-Balart effort has been stripped from the compromise bill under negotiation, and Obama would find it difficult if not impossible to block it if it remains on the version of the spending bill that reaches his desk.

The Diaz-Balart measure would return the restrictions to levels set by President George W. Bush: only one trip every three years for “family reunifications,” a cap on remittances of $1,200 per year and a tighter definition of “family.”’

“This is changing the rules in the middle of the game,” Serrano told El Nuevo Herald Monday. “What happens to Doña Juana, who left today for Cuba. She will be in violation … What happens to people who made plans to travel the 22nd?”

Hiscox launches new travel insurance policy Dec 13

Tuesday, 13 December 2011 11:59

A new travel insurance policy has been launched by specialist insurer Hiscox.

The annual product can provide cover for European or worldwide travel and is available for individuals, families or couples via the website or on the phone.

Among the benefits are up to £10 million emergency medical cover and up to £50,000 in legal expenses, as well as £10,000 in cover for political unrest and natural catastrophe evacuation.

There are also additional cover options available to add on to the policy, including business trip cover and protection for winter ski holidays.

Hiscox UK and Ireland managing director Steve Langan said: “This comprehensive annual policy means you can enjoy everything … with peace of mind, knowing that if something does go wrong, you’ll get the assistance you need.”

Last month, financial research company Defaqto warned winter sports enthusiasts that they must take out proper travel insurance to protect them, as many policies do not offer this kind of cover as standard.
