Detroit Lions travel to the Big Easy with all the motivation they need Jan 05

Jim Schwartz has no shortage of bulletin board material this week.  Not only is this the Lions first playoff appearance since 1999, not only would a win be the franchise’s first since George H.W. Bush was president, but now the Saints have upped the ante.

Shortly after the Superdome was cleared out following a University of Michigan win in the Sugar Bowl, the outside of the dome read “Here Kitty.”

As if revenge wasn’t motivation enough.

The week 13 Sunday Night Football game between these two teams resulted in a Saints win, one that the Lions are surely looking to avenge on Saturday.  The super-sized trash talking will undoubtedly make their desire that much stronger.

Since the last matchup between the Big Easy and the Big Felines, much has changed.  After losing to the Saints, Detroit promptly went on a dramatic three game win streak before losing a heartbreaker in Green Bay.  More importantly, the team has gotten healthy (and Unsuspended).  Especially defensively, the Lions will be an entirely new team than the one the Saints saw five weeks ago.  Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh will be on the field this time around, and will be looking to make up for lost time and force quarterback Drew Brees to feel his presence.  Corner Chris Houston will also be active for this matchup as well, and will provide a body who can run stride for stride with wide receiver Marques Colston.

But this is the playoffs (playoffs???).  Yes, Jim, we’re talking about playoffs.  And that means all bets are off.  Numbers mean nothing (see Seahawks def. Saints in last year’s divisional playoffs), and talk means less.  Playoffs are all about key plays, clutch performances, and heart.  The Saints have clearly showed the world that they have everything it takes to be successful in the postseason.  For those who haven’t been watching, it has been just two years since these same Saints took the Lombardi Trophy to New Orleans.

While the Saints have proven themselves, the Lions are quite the opposite.  Exactly one of the 53 players on the roster has playoff experience with Detroit: kicker Jason Hanson.  A few players have come to Detroit with postseason games under their belt with other teams, and Jim Schwartz certainly has his fair share of playoff experience.  What intrigues me most are the newcomers.  Will Matthew Stafford elevate his play even further when the pressure is on?  Will Ndamukong Suh channel his tenacity towards making a playoff run?  With Calvin Johnson double and triple covered, will it be rookie Titus Young who turns into a postseason star?  Or will it be veteran Nate Burleson who will finally see his name in lights?

The matchup is pretty clear: perennial winners versus perennial losers.  On top of their Superbowl win, the Saints have made two more trips to the playoffs and endured just three losing seasons since the last Lions’ playoff berth.  The Lions, meanwhile, are in the midst of their first winning season since 2000, and oh by the way, went 0-16 three seasons ago.

I don’t think I need to spell out the storylines any further, but hopefully I have convinced you that there will be a football game on NBC Saturday at 8pm that will be worth watching.

While no one can know exactly how the inexperienced Lions will react in the postseason, one thing I can say with conviction is that tenacity wins games under pressure, and the Lions have it.  If the Lions can be tenacious as opposed to foolish, I see a different result this time around in New Orleans.  Penalty yards were the demise of the Lions last time in the Superdome, and if they cut the mental lapses, they can certainly win this game.

Having Suh back will help as well, and I don’t think Brees is looking forward to his first official meeting with the monster defensive tackle.

Who’s the Kitty now?

Pet-travel tips from the ‘Dog Whisperer’ Jan 05

TV’s “Dog Whisperer,” Cesar Millan, offers suggestions to ensure winter safety for your playful pooches, as well as rules for kids who encounter them.

If your beloved dog has ever lifted a leg on a hotel staircase, escaped out of the backseat of your car or kept everyone in your vacation rental awake with mournful howls, you are due for a lesson from the “Dog Whisperer.”

Cesar Millan takes his dogs — Junior the pitbull and Coco the chihuahua — on so many journeys that the two pooches practically carry their own platinum-level frequent flier cards.

AP

Dog whisperer Cesar Millan, pictured with his dog, Junior, shared some ideas to make traveling with pets easier and less stressful.

To prepare your dog for the unfamiliar and unnatural experience of being in an airplane, Millan recommends rehearsing ahead of the trip.

“Put [your pet] in the crate for a few hours, put him in the car, and help him associate a calm feeling with the crate and travel,” Millan said. If pets — or people — get nervous on the actual travel day, try rubbing lavender oil on the paws or hands, Millan suggests. It is found to have a calming effect on humans and animals alike.

Many owners of big dogs struggle with the issue of whether to sedate their pet before it goes into the cargo space. Millan says it’s OK to skip the knockout drugs.

“The best and most natural sedation is to take them for a long, even longer, the longest walk that day, so the dog is so tired it’s almost in hibernation,” he said.

Related: Cesar Millan offers 15 tips for pet-friendly travel

While flying might be the most challenging travel element for a pet, owners and fellow travelers often get put to the test on the ground. When animals are forced into completely new and unexpected environments, they can react in a variety of ways: growling, hiding in the bathtub, trying to escape, and of course, having an “accident.”

“It is not the dog’s fault,” Millan said. “Most of the time it means that the owner has gone too soon indoors without walking the dog, or it can mean that the dog is nervous and this is a fear reaction.”

Don’t be embarrassed, pet owners — just clean up the mess.

“Every pet-friendly hotel knows the consequences of welcoming dog guests,” Millan said.

For hoteliers, one consequence is more pet-toting customers.

Dede Gotthelf, owner of the Southampton Inn, initially designated 10 percent of her rooms as pet-friendly, but has increased to 15 percent in order to meet strong customer demand.

“We have had large dogs, small dogs, cats, occasional birds in cages, and a bearded dragon that visits every Columbus Day weekend,” Gotthelf said. Her affluent, primarily East Coast customer base considers their pets “part of the family” — and are willing to pay a nominal nightly pet fee on top of the room rate, which averages around $500 during the summer high season (about half that in off-season).

The Southampton Inn, like nearly all pet-friendly accommodations, has “house rules” that require owners to obey leash laws, be respectful of other guests’ space, and clean up messes to the best of their ability.

One rule guests may be most tempted to break involves leaving pets alone in a room. While most hoteliers will overlook a bit of late-night yapping or a minor mess, hotels can ask you to leave if your dog is found unattended in your room. In other words, if you head out for dinner, the pooch goes with you.

When renting a car, be aware that rental companies are not required to give pets the same rights as people. If they extend a pet-friendly policy, be a responsible customer. Safety on the road should be your priority — and when you’re ready to return, cleanliness is crucial.

“Take caution to ensure pets are kept in one area of the car. Thoroughly clean hair and any pet messes from its cars prior to rental return,” advised Paula Rivera, manager of public affairs for Hertz. Not only is it thoughtful to the next customer, but it’ll also avoid cleaning fees.

One pet-mess scenario — the car-sick dog — is fairly common. It can’t be completely avoided, but humans can control some factors.

“Motion sickness for dogs is very different than for humans,” said Millan. “It does not mix well with a full stomach.” Thus, while you might want to stick with a normal feeding routine while traveling, it’s actually better not to feed a pet much before or during a long drive day.

“If it has been a long trip, you can give little pieces of chicken or mini snacks, but space them out,” Millan said.

As for bathroom breaks, Millan suggests keeping an eye on the new environment. In crowded rest stops, if you don’t trust your dog or the other dogs in the space, Millan recommends keeping your dog on a six-foot leash.

“Travel means adventure,” he said. “There are obstacles and challenges, but if you can weather these safely with your pets, you will see how your bond grows.”

Residents of the Bay Area won’t have to go too far to book their next flight into space.

Alpine Travel of Saratoga, CA is one of 58 accredited travel agencies working with Virgin Galactic, which is getting closer to send passengers to the edge of space.

In the past, anyone who wanted to go to space had to shell out millions of dollars, strap themselves into a Russian tin can, and be shot at the International Space Station. Now, all you need is a mere $200k (who doesn’t have that just lying around, amiright?) and you can book a flight on Virgin’s space skimming ship, almost as easy as booking a flight to the Keys.

“Just to be able to sell space travel as a regular part of your business, really, just how cool is that?” Lynda Turley Garrett, president of Alpine Travel, told the New York Times.

By 2017, “it’ll be just like scheduling a flight to L.A.,” Garrett went on to say.

Roundtop Mountain Resort: A Huffington Post Travel Ski Resort Guide Jan 05

Roundtop Mountain Resort in Pennsylvania is a popular destination for skiers and snowboarders. As part of a series on ski resorts, Huffington Post Travel offers our guide to Roundtop Mountain Resort, featuring all the key information snow lovers need to know before they hit the slopes.

The Basics

Roundtop Mountain, a family-friendly resort located about 20 miles from Pennsylvania’s capital, Harrisburg, and a little more than an hour from Baltimore, Maryland, offers area skiers and snowboarders a convenient and affordable way to enjoy a day on the slopes. This resort, which was formerly known as Ski Roundtop, features slopes that are pretty evenly distributed between beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. The owners of Roundtop Mountain Resort, which has been open since 1964, also manage nearby Liberty Mountain and Whitetail resorts, so season passes purchased at one are good at all three mountains.

The Mountain

The Roundtop Mountain area isn’t blessed with a ton of snow — approximately 30 inches on average a year. To make up for this, Roundtop creates a lot of its own snow. Unfortunately, the pack can, at times, be hard and icy. The longest run on the 1,355-foot-tall mountain is 4,100 feet long, and its vertical drop is listed at 600 feet. Depending on weather conditions, Roundtop’s skiing season runs typically from mid-December through the middle of March.

Trails And Lifts

According to the Pennsylvania Ski Areas Association, Roundtop features 16 trails, with 28 percent rated easy, 37 percent intermediate and 24 percent tagged as expert level. The slopes are serviced by three quad and three triple lifts, as well as one carpet lift and a J-bar. Roundtop is open for night skiing and also has two terrain parks, as well as a half-pipe, for general shredding. The resort’s beginner slopes, such as Fife Drum, have been designed in such a way as to separate beginners from more advanced skiers, giving them a chance to boost their confidence on their own terms before moving up to more difficult slopes.

In The News

Roundtop Mountain Resort, along with its sister resorts, Liberty and Whitetail, were awarded the National Ski Areas Association Conversion Cup prize for providing the best introductory skiing programs in the nation. In addition, the resort offers Nature Valley NASTAR recreational racing every Friday night. Talented skiers and snowboarders should be on the lookout for the Roundtop Mountain Resort’s park crew, which films weekly segments in the terrain parks called RT Weekends. The videos, which show off the skills of Roundtop guests, are featured on the resort’s website.

Cost

The prices at Roundtop Mountain Resorts are kept at a reasonable, family-friendly level, with four-hour flex tickets starting at $46 for a weekday and going up to $55 on weekends. Juniors, ages 6 to 12, pay $41 to $48 for the four-hour flex. The price for a beginner’s class that includes rentals ranges from $60 to $84. Lesson packages for children, ages 4 to 12, range from $67 to $102. The best deals are season passes, which start at $639 and give the owner access to Roundtop, as well as its nearby sister slopes, Liberty and Whitetail. The mountain also offers specials, such as a four-hour $35 ski package that includes rentals for college students on Wednesdays. Guests in need of ski or snowboard gear can rent it from Roundtop for $40 a day. Helmets are also available for $12.

Apres-Ski

Roundtop Mountain Resort is what some would consider a stand-alone ski area. It does not have an on-site hotel or other resort-like amenities and is a popular commuter resort, suitable for a quick day or night of skiing. Roundtop does have a restaurant on-site, the Fireside Pub Grill. For non-skiers or anyone in need of something different, Roundtop Mountain Resort has a fun eight-lane snow-tubing park.

Airlines raise fees for Europe travel Jan 05

NEW YORK (AP) – Within days of new European rules on carbon emissions produced by passenger jets, two major airlines say they will raise fares.

Delta Air Lines began adding $6 per round trip to the price of tickets sold in the U.S. for travel to Europe. Lufthansa says it will raise prices but not right away.

Under European regulations that took effect this week, airlines flying in and out of Europe must get certificates to pay for the carbon dioxide emissions produced by their flights. They will get
free credits to cover most flights this year but must buy or trade for credits to cover future emissions.

Lufthansa puts its cost at euro130 million ($168 million) this year.
