Citizens of EU countries need only a valid national identity card to enter Austria. Since Britain has no identity card, however, British citizens do have to take a passport. EU citizens can stay for as long as they want, but if they're planning on staying permanently they should register with the local police. Citizens of the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia require a passport, but no visa, and can stay up to three months.

Visa requirements do change, however, and it is always advisable to check the current situation before leaving home. We've listed Austrian embassies abroad; addresses of foreign embassies and consulates in Vienna and other major cities are also given in the guide.

Customs

Customs and duty-free restrictions vary throughout Europe, with subtle differences even within the European Union. British and Irish travellers returning home directly from another EU country do not have to make a declaration to customs at their place of entry. In other words, British and Irish citizens can effectively take back as much duty-paid wine or beer as they can carry, the guideline limits being 90 litres of wine (of which no more than 60 litres should be sparkling), 110 litres of beer, 800 cigarettes or 1kg of tobacco.

Residents of the US and Canada can take up to 200 cigarettes or 50 cigars and one litre of spirits (or 2.25 litres of wine, or three litres of beer) back home. Australian citizens must limit themselves to 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco and just one litre of wine or spirits, while New Zealanders are allowed 200 cigarettes or 250g of tobacco, 4.5 litres of beer or wine, and one litre of spirits. Again, if in doubt consult the relevant embassy.
