Bars, cafés and café-bars
Sachsenhausen, with its cobbled
streets and lively atmosphere, has
many modern alternatives to its
famous apple-wine taverns. As home
to a large student population,
Bockenheim has plenty of youthful,
inexpensive cafés. In the city
centre, there are a few gems which
are well worth seeking out in
preference to the many overcrowded
and overpriced alternatives.
Discos, nightclubs and live music
Not surprisingly Frankfurt's
nightlife is pretty eclectic, and
there's a wide range of live music
on offer. The local disco scene is
heavily dance music-oriented, with
most venues serving up house/techno
beats for predominantly young
crowds. Places tend to stay open
until 4am during the week and 5am or
6am at weekends. Entry starts at
about DM10/?5. For details of
events, the best magazines are Prinz
(DM2/?1) and Journal Frankfurt
(DM3.50/?1.75). Free magazines such
as Fritz and Strandgut
, which also cover other towns in
central Hesse, are also useful.
Culture
Frankfurt has a predictably lively
performing-arts scene, with a wide
range of choice in both music and
theatre, and an established
tradition of productions in
English.
