Residenz
The Residenz is a
splendid Mannerist
palace built for the
Bavarian dukes by a team
of mostly Dutch artists.
When Bavaria became a
kingdom in the early
nineteenth century, it
was given Neoclassical
extensions.
Schloss Nymphenburg
The summer residence of
the Bavarian rulers,
Schloss Nymphenburg, is
a Baroque palace set in
a fine park, dotted with
pavillions. These
include the Amalienburg,
a hunting lodge
extravagantly designed
by the court architect
François Cuvilliés.
Frauenkirche
With its distinctive
pair of onion-domed
towers - one of which
can be ascended by
elevator for a view over
the city - the Gothic
Frauenkirche, seat of
the local archbishop, is
the focus of the city
skyline.
Oktoberfest
The sixteen-day-long
Oktoberfest is the
world's largest and most
boisterous beer
festival, set in a
"village" of
gigantic tents with an
accompanying fair.
Cuvilliés theatre
Formerly the court
theatre, this Rococo
jewel has been renamed
in honour of its
architect François
Cuvilliés, and is now
the most prestigious
performance venue in
Munich.
Deutsches Museum
The Deutches Museum
covers every aspect of
technological history
from early flint tools
to modern research labs,
and offers a multitude
of hands-on displays
plus huge collections of
planes, boats and cars.
Alte Pinakothek
The Alte Pinakothek
ranks among the world's
premier art galleries,
with an outstanding
collection of paintings
from the fourteenth to
the eighteenth
centuries, including an
unrivalled
representation of German
artists.
Hofbräuhaus
In its own estimation
"the most famous
pub in the world",
the Hofbräuhaus
is among the most
popular of Munich beer
halls. Although often
seething with tourists,
it has a hard-core local
clientele.
Schwabing
The district of
Schwabing is Munich's
social hub, with a
long-established
reputation for radical
bohemian chic, as
exemplified by the
literary café-bar Alter
Simpl, birthplace of
the satirical magazine
Simplicissimus.
Englischer Garten
Munich's main
playground, the
Englischer Garten, takes
its name from the
eighteenth-century
landscaping fashion
which aimed to resemble
untouched nature. Three
of the city's best known
beer gardens lie within
its boundaries.
