MUNICH
(MÜNCHEN) - THE CITY |
 |
Heart of the city and its Altstadt
is Marienplatz ; the
pedestrian centre fans out from here
in an approximate circle of one
square kilometre. This is tourist
and shopping land, with all the
city's major department stores, the
central market, the royal palace and
the most important churches. North
of Marienplatz, Ludwigstrasse and
Leopoldstrasse run straight through
the heart of Schwabing ,
Munich's entertainment quarter, full
of Schickies (German yuppies)
who frequent the many bars and pose
in the street cafés. It's also
close to the city's main park, the Englischer
Garten . West of the
Marienplatz-Schwabing axis is the
main museum quarter , with
many of the most important of
Munich's three dozen or so museums,
including the world-famous Alte
Pinakothek. Running the length of
the eastern part of town is the
River Isar, while Nymphenburg
, with its palace and gardens, is
the most enticing of the outer
districts.
