Palermo's airport is at Punta Raisi, 31km west of the city, from where fairly regular buses run into the centre, stopping outside the Politeama Garibaldi theatre on Piazza Ruggero Séttimo, and finally outside the Hotel Elena , at the Stazione Centrale; the first bus is at 5am, the last departure timed for the last flight arrival (17 daily, a 45min journey; L7500/3.90; enquiries tel 091.580.457). Note that for the return journey, departures leave every thirty minutes from 5am to about 10.30pm from outside the Hotel Elena , and follow the same route. Taxi fares for the same trip run to around L65,000/33.80 per car, though you might be able to negotiate a lower price.

Trains all pull in at the Stazione Centrale (24hr train enquiries tel 147.888.088), at the southern end of Via Roma, close to the cheap accommodation; buses #101 and #102, and two circular minibus services - linea gialla and linea rossa - connect with the modern city from outside the station.

Country- and island-wide buses serve terminals all over Palermo: AST operate out of Piazza Lolli and Via Balsamo for Bagheria, Corleone, Módica and Ragusa; Cuffaro services depart from Via P. Balsamo 13 for Agrigento; SAIS leave from Via P. Balsamo 16 for Rome, Caltanissetta, Catania, Enna, Piazza Armerina, Messina, Siracusa, Noto, Cefalù and Términi Imerese; and Segesta go from Via P. Balsamo 26 (for Rome and Trápani). All ferry and hydrofoil services dock at the Stazione Maríttima, just off Via Francesco Crispi, from where it's a ten-minute walk up Via E. Amari to Piazza Castelnuovo.
