Siena's
train station is
2km northeast of town, down in the
valley. It has a counter selling
city bus tickets (Mon-Sat
5.50am-7.30pm; L1400/?0.72). To
get into town, cross the road and
take just about any city
bus
heading left (#3, #9 to Tozzi; #4,
#7, #8, #14, #17, #77 to
Garibaldi/Sale; #10 to Gramsci)
all of which drop off about 100m
north of Piazza Matteotti on the
northern edge of the centre. Most
intercity
buses arrive on Viale Tozzi,
the road running alongside Piazza
Gramsci, or at La Lizza nearby,
but note that many now avoid the
centre and terminate at the train
station instead. Coming from
Florence
by train , you may
need to change at Empoli (takes
1hr 45min);
by bus , there
are hourly SITA expresses (takes
1hr 15min).
The tourist office is at
no. 56 on the Campo (April-Oct
Mon-Sat 8.30am-7.30pm; Nov-March
Mon-Fri 8.30am-1pm & 3-7pm,
Sat 8.30am-1pm; tel 0577.280.551, www.siena.turismo.toscana.it
). "Ecco Siena" guided
walks (in English) start from
outside the office (April-Oct
Mon-Sat 4.30pm; L35,000/?18.08;
last 2hr 30min).
