The ability to speak English
confers prestige in Italy,
and there's often no
shortage of people willing
to show off their knowledge,
particularly returned
emigrati. However, even in
the main cities and resorts
you'll need to use at least
some Italian, and in more
remote areas you may well
find no one speaks English
