The Karlsturm
Climb the Karlsturm - one of the
twin towers of Zurich's Grossmünster
church - for a spectacular view. The
great sixteenth-century Protestant
reformer, Huldrych Zwingli, would
also have gazed out from here whilst
meditating on ways to renew the
Catholic faith.
Niederdorf
The Niederdorf is the pedestrianized,
medieval part of town in the centre
of Zurich, which in the evening is
buzzing with bars and restaurants.
Peterskirche
From the square beneath Peterskirche
you can get a good view of the
largest clock face in Europe, which
adorns the church's medieval tower.
It's worth taking a look at the
ballroom-like interior of the
Peterskirche too.
The Kunsthaus
The Kunsthaus has an impressive
collection of sculptures by Rodin,
Moore and Tinguely, and a strong
section on the French
Impressionists. Place of honour, of
course, goes to the Swiss artists,
including two eighteenth-century
expatriates who worked in London:
Fuseli and Angelika Kauffman.
Marc Chagall Windows in Fraumünster
The Marc Chagall stained-glass
windows in Fraumünster church are
an excellent combination of modern
art and venerable architecture.
Chagall's warm colours and intimate
depictions of biblical icons stand
happily in their elegant Gothic
frames.
